Fenestra Winery History

1976 Lanny & Fran Replogle start business as Ventana Winery in the Ruby Hill Winery Building in Pleasanton. The original Stony Ridge Winery occupied that building and Lanny was consulting winemaker for them while teaching Organic Chemistry full-time at San Jose State University. There were only 4 wineries in the Livermore Valley at the time, Wente, Concannon, Villa Armando & Stony Ridge.

1978 Winery name changed from Ventana ("window " in Spanish) to Fenestra ( "window " in Latin) due to conflict with Ventana Vineyards.

1980 Fenestra moves to the True Winery which has not been used as a winery for two decades. The property is in a state of disrepair, and it takes eight months to rehabilitate. The property, approximately 770 acres, and is owned by the Catholic Church, diocese of Oakland and is being leased to coleman Foley.

1985 Tasting room opens on the weekends from 12:00 to 5:00

1987 First True Red released: 75% Zin, 15% Cab, merlot & Petite Sirah

1990 Fenestra Fanatics wine club is started.

1992 Lanny retires from teaching

1995 Property is sold to Signature Properties as part of Ruby Hill Development.
- A significant portion of the roof is blown off.
- True Red production is increased from 800 to 1200 cases

1997 Vineyards planted: 4.5 acres of Syrah & 1.3 acres of Mourvedre.
- Building is renovated by Signature Properties
-True Red production is increased to 1700 cases




1999 First harvest of estate grapes.

2002 The winery began production using Portuguese-type and other varieties from Silvaspoons Vineyard near Lodi.

2003: The first estate syrah, from the 1999 vintage, was released.

2005 About 5000 cases of wine are lost in Wines Central warehouse fire.

2006 Purchase of bottling line equipment.

2007 Fenestra purchases the property from Signature Properties which included , 16.4 acres 5.8 arcres of vineyards, the winery buildings and the surronding grounds..
Also in 2007 Brent Amos promoted to Winemaker

2008 photovoltaic solar panels are installed
- About one acre of Syrah grafted over to Grenache grapes

2012: True Red production was increased to 2150 cases.

2013 Meredith Miles was promoted to Winemaker.
Also in 2013 The first lot of True White is released.

2014 April 8, It is with great sadness that Fenestra Winery announces the passing of one of their founders, Fran Replogle. Read more...
